Another day, another American mass shooting
Because a society saturated with guns is just so fucking safe.Okay. Here we go. A society saturated with guns is not the problem. A society saturated with guns is not what causes mass shootings. I’m actually convinced a society without guns would be much, much more dangerous. Guns today are put on a pedestal, locked in a cabinet, and kept a secret. What happens then? That’s how it should be right? Wrong. When you neglect to tell your kids and their friends and their parents and their cousins sisters step kids about guns, educate them about proper usage, legalities, and show them the recreational side of guns - you’re taking away the forbidden fruit aspect. Millions of people a day go shooting every day without harming a single human soul. But you don’t hear about that in the news do you? No. A society hell bent on guns isn’t the problem. The problem is we’re a society hell bent on negativity, drama, gore, and morbidity. The problem is we know we need to educate our younger generations, but we neglect to educate them on what’s important.
Do you really think that a society without LEGAL gun ownership would stop violence, death and mass casualty incidents? Do you really think that somebody criminally insane or somebody without intense motive won’t just find another way to carry out their ideas and plans? Lets outlaw plastic, since it can be used in home made bombs. Lets outlaw water, since you can drown someone in it. Shit, lets outlaw breathing - because pollution can cause lung cancer and lung cancer mass murders every single day.
I bet you didn’t know that there’s a waiting period to buy a gun, some states it’s a few days, some states it’s longer. Why? It’s called a cool down period. So you don’t decide “wow I’m fucking livid I’m going to go buy a handgun and kill this motherfucker right now” and up and do it all within the hour. But you don’t hear much about that do you? I wonder why. It might have to do with the fact that GUNS USED IN INNOCENT MURDERS AND MASS KILLINGS ARE VERY RARELY REGISTERED TO THAT SHOOTER. But, we should punish those that use their weapons completely legally and harmlessly. That makes sense.
Alas, my final and most important point. You might’ve heard the phrase “disarming innocent civilians does not protect innocent civilians”. Have you given it any thought? What you don’t hear in the news is the hundreds of home invasions, attacks, or other crimes with intent to harm that result in a family being protected by a criminal because a wise member of that family made the responsible decision to own a gun. You don’t hear about the counless lives that are saved every day by guns. You don’t hear about the joy hitting your first bullseye brings someone. You don’t hear about the smile on an old man’s face when he finally finds the one gun he’s been waiting his whole life for to complete his collection. You don’t hear about the high intensity competitions and the talent that some 8 year old kid has that changed his life because of guns. You don’t hear about the number of policemen and federal agents who saved the lives of themselves and those that flank them by making the decision to shoot to suppress or kill. You don’t hear about any of this, and maybe it’s because you choose not to.
These arguments are all very interesting — until you apply logic, then they completely fall apart.
There actually are countries that restrict gun ownership much more stringently than the United States. By the logic above, they must be bloodsoaked nightmares. Yet the US is the place where these massacres happen and places like, say, Japan or Finland are not.
The best answer to these arguments is a good long look at the real world. Do they reflect reality? They do not.
