RIP Satoshi Kon

I loved his films, but PAPRIKA holds a special place in my heart.

The image above is from The Dream Machine, a work in progress anime feature film that remains incomplete, now that its director, Satoshi Kon, has very sadly passed away.

On hearing of his death, I tried in vain to write a small tribute to Satoshi Kon. Unfortunately, I simply couldn’t order my emotional responses in a way that I felt did him justice. Suffice to say, he was one of my very favourite filmmakers, and had been ever since I made a then-rare trip from Oxford to London’s ICA to see Perfect Blue in May 1999. It was the only film I wanted to talk about for months afterwards.

Each of his films ranks highly with me, I’ve seen them all multiple times, and his TV series Paranoia Agent is one of my favourite small screen productions also. All I’m trying to say is, really, I can’t quite believe it yet, let alone process it, and I’m shocked and sad that an artist who meant a great deal to me has gone. I feel quite confused and even bereft.

That Satoshi Kon died of pancreatic cancer, which also killed my mother, and apparently on the anniversary of her death, just confuses me further.
